Throughout my life I’ve always enjoyed taking English Writing courses, but I didn’t always feel an enjoyment when taking them. Very few of the courses that I’ve taken have given me something to really think about every step of the way. Uninspired writing is worse than any other kind, and can severely hinder how great a writer can become. A piece of writing is great when the writer is not only challenged technically, but challenged with evolving creatively as a whole. Throughout the duration of this course, I found what I had been missing in the other English writing courses that I’ve taken. I found the balance to feel challenged but also enjoy doing it. Feeling anxious to get your ideas out and tell stories, whether they are true or false, is a great feeling. This course gave me an opportunity to treat writing almost like a catharsis, and I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to do so in the structure that I did. Not many people get these opportunities so it’s imperative to take advantage when given one.
Spreading your words to a wide variety of people can sometimes be a big struggle. Not everyone understands you. Not everyone will agree with the message that you try to get across to them. Even if they don’t, the goal should be to make them think. Place something in their brains that will make them at least make them respect your opinion enough to have an objection to it. The hardest time for me to do this was in the narrative essay. I chose to write about a rough time in my life where I had never understood the effects that Chicago violence had on people until I had to experience it for myself. I had lost a close family member, and didn’t quite know how to handle it. How would people who had no knowledge of these hardships react? How would they understand what it was like to go through these things? These thoughts challenged me to convey my message thoroughly and effectively.
My writing has improved in various ways throughout my time taking this course. I didn’t always write freely before my time in this class. I always felt strained when I wrote. I was forcing my sentences, trying too hard to make sense, and seeming as if I was just trying to fulfill the page limits. After taking this course, I never even thought about a page limit. I write and sometimes have to stop myself because I’ve been writing too much. I went into each paper challenged to decide what to write about because there was a lot of thought that went into each paper. Thinking back on life experiences and dissecting life experiences was special and helped me appreciate everything that I was taught in the process. Peer editing papers, writing multiple drafts, and taking ample time to complete the papers presented in the class have elevated my writing to levels that I could have never imagined it’d reach.
I was helped a lot in my writing by going over different experiences and research before actually knowing the prompt for the paper. This made it easier to figure out what to write about when it was finally time to begin writing the paper. I appreciated all of these things, and I believe everything I learned paid off, especially considering I never earned a grade below a B on any of the papers we wrote throughout the semester. In the past, I slacked a lot on papers and waited until the last minute to complete them. I worked very hard to succeed in this course, and I’m proud of everything I achieved throughout the process. There have been very few English classes that I’ve given my 100% all to achieving in and I’m proud to say that this course gave me the proper guidance to do so.
